Looking to escape the cold and snow that has made the Winter of 2013-14 memorable, four Buccaneers teams are making their way South during the Beloit College Spring Break.
Kim Zarling begins her seventh season with the Buccaneer Softball team, who will play nine games at the Rebel Spring Games in Winter Haven, Florida. Beloit opens up against Simpson College of Iowa on Sunday, March 9, at 11:00 a.m. CT and then takes on Defiance College of Ohio later that day. They also play Westminster College and Geneva College out of Pennsylvania, Illinois Wesleyan University, Mitchell College of Connecticut, Thomas More College of Kentucky, and Albion College of Michigan. Highlighting the schedule is a match-up with #2-ranked Montclair State University of New Jersey at 10:00 a.m. CT on Wednesday, March 12. After completing the trip the squad has a week before their Northern opener, hosting Concordia University Chicago and Loras College on Saturday, March 22, at the Strong Complex Softball Field.
Dave DeGeorge enters his 24th season with the Buccaneer Baseball squad, opening their 2014 season with eight games as part of the RussMatt Central Florida Invite. The Bucs celebrate the first pitch of the season in a doubleheader against Becker College of Massachusetts on Sunday, March 9, beginning at 3:00 p.m. CT in Leesburg. They also play doubleheaders against Cairn University of Pennsylvania on Monday, March 10; Cazenovia College of New York on Friday, March 14; and Alfred State College of New York on Saturday, March 15, to close the trip. The Bucs have junior varsity games scheduled for Tuesday, March 11, and Thursday, March 13. After getting back North they have a week off before opening their home season on Saturday, March 22, with a doubleheader against Wisconsin Lutheran College at The Ballpark at Strong Stadium, beginning at 12 noon.
Meredith Newman and the Buccaneer Women’s Lacrosse team will play a pair of games at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. They take on Hilbert College of New York on Monday, March 10, at 9:00 a.m. CT and Ohio Wesleyan University on Wednesday, March 12, also at 9:00 a.m. CT. After flying back to Wisconsin they host Mt. St. Joseph College in the MWLC opener on Saturday, March 15, at Strong Stadium beginning at 1:00 p.m.
The Buccaneer Men’s Lacrosse team isn’t heading to Florida but they are going South for two games. Under head coach Bob Dignazio Beloit plays Kenyon College, Dignazio’s alma mater, at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia, at 11:00 p.m. CT on Tuesday, March 11. They then travel to Buena Vista, Virginia, to play Southern Virginia University on Thursday, March 13, at 4:00 p.m. CT. After getting back home, they play at Olivet College in Michigan, on Saturday, March 22, before hosting Augustana College on Wednesday, March 26, at Strong Stadium.
