Lake Barrington, IL -- The Beloit College Women's Lacrosse team had to take their season-opener indoors on Tuesday but it didn't seem to matter much as they came away with a big 21-7 win against Wilmington College at the Lake Barrington Fieldhouse.
After spotting the Fightin' Quakers the first goal of the season Beloit rattled off nine straight scores, including four by Sara Fithian and three by Hannah Drexler, to take a commanding lead. WC stopped the run with three straight goals before Drexler got the fourth goal of her career 10 minutes before halftime. Wilmington scored at 9:55 to make it a 10-5 Buccaneer lead at the break.
The Bucs wasted little time increasing their lead in the second half, scoring six goals in the first 10 minutes, two of them by Michelle Dillon, to make it 16-5 and start the running clock. Beloit outscored the Quakers 5-2 in the final 18 minutes to win going away.
Fithian finished with seven goals, tied for the most in a game in the program's young history, and added three assists for 10 points, the most ever recorded in a Buccaneer game. Drexler added five goals and four assists while Dillon had four goals.
Libby Storrick and Iris Esquivel each scored twice, with Storrick adding three assists, and Sarah Pipal had a goal and an assist. Sam Schonberger also had an assist.
Marie Bonine made six saves for her first career win in net, with Celeste Jenkins making one save in the last 10-plus minutes.
The Buccaneers now head for Florida for a pair of games at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex in Lake Buena Vista. Beloit plays Hilbert College of New York on Monday, March 10, and Ohio Wesleyan University on Wednesday, March 12. Both games begin at 10:00 a.m. ET.
