Grinnell, Iowa -- The Beloit College Men's Basketball team was in a tight game in the final seven minutes at Grinnell College on Saturday before a quick spurt by the Pioneers opened it up and sent the Bucs to a tough 111-98 defeat.
The teams were close throughout the opening half, with eight ties and seven lead changes, until GC scored six of the final nine points to grab a 45-41 advantage at the break.
The first five minutes of the second half stayed close before the Pioneers broke away from the 12th tie of the game at the 14:45 mark with a 12-2 run to open a 73-63 lead midway through. But Beloit answered right away with a 16-6 run that tied it all up, again, at 79.
Grinnell had what turned out to be the game-deciding run when they turned an 85-all tie with just under seven minutes left into a 97-86 advantage just over a minute later. The Buccaneers never got close than nine the rest of the way.
James Lazarcik scored 29 points with nine rebounds while Rudy Bentley had a career-best 25 points to go with six assists. Tyler Butke added 19 points and nine rebounds.
The Bucs shot 58.1% from the field for the game. GC hit just 44% of their shots from the field but made seven three-pointers in each half (Beloit was 0-1 on three's).
Beloit returns to Flood Arena on Wednesday night to host Lawrence University in the "Play for the Cure" game. Tipoff is at 5:30 p.m.
