Mount Vernon, IA -- The stretch run has begun for the Beloit College Men's Basketball team. And step one was a success with a 58-53 come-from-behind win at Cornell College on Saturday afternoon.
The Rams used a 15-3 run in the first half to turn a 3-3 tie into an 18-6 lead at the 8:57 mark. The Bucs got back within six with a 10-4 run to make it 22-16 with 5:12 left but CC held their lead and went into the break up 31-23.
Cornell pushed the lead back up to 11 three minutes into the second half before Beloit went on a 10-minute, 16-5 run to pull into a 43-all tie with 6:49 remaining. Rudy Bentley's three-pointer at 6:06 gave the Buccaneers a lead they wouldn't give up. The Bucs hit 4-5 free throws in the final 50 seconds to close out the win.
Beloit only shot 38% for the game but hit on 52.2% of their shots in the second half while outscoring the Rams 35-22.
James Lazarcik and Steve McAfee each had 13 points, with Lazarcik adding 11 rebounds, to lead the way. Tyler Butke and Bentley each scored 12, with Bentley dishing out five assists.
Beloit looks to keep rolling on Wednesday night when they host Lake Forest College at Flood Arena. Game time is at 5:30 p.m.
