Tight Game Goes Wrong Way for Bucs in Final Minute

Buccaneer Men's BasketballMonmouth, WI -- The Beloit College Men's Basketball team saw their early-season slump continue on Saturday afternoon in a close 82-79 loss to Monmouth College, a game decided in the final minute.

Neither team could gain control in an opening half that featured seven ties and six lead changes.  The Bucs finally grabbed the biggest lead of the half by closing out the last 3:20 on an 8-2 run to take a 37-31 advantage into the lockerroom.

After Beloit pushed their lead to eight early in the second half the Fighting Scots chipped away to pull back even.  Monmouth finally started to pull away in the final minutes, building a 77-70 lead on a 7-0 run with 2:41 remaining.  But the Buccaneers scored seven straight points of their own to force the 12th tie of the game at 77-all with 1:36 left.  The last 1:14 was a free throw contest that went Monmouth's way with MC hitting five of six while the Bucs only 2-2 for the final.

James Lazarcik led five players in double figures with 16 points.  Steve McAfee had 15 with eight rebounds, Chris Bremner and Tyler Butke 12 apiece and Steve Dowden 10.

Beloit looks to break the slump on Tuesday night at Lake Forest College.  Tipoff is at 5:30 p.m.
