River Forest, IL -- The Beloit College Men's Basketball team overcame a rough shooting first half to take control in the second half on the way to a 71-69 win in the 2013-14 season opener at Dominican University Tuesday night.
Leading 19-15 with 8:35 left in the opening half the Buccaneers went cold as the Stars went on a 10-0 run to jump up 25-19 with 4:45 left. But Beloit closed the half with five unanswered points to trail 30-28 at the break.
The Bucs continued their run to open the second half, pushing it out to 11-0 and a 34-30 lead less than two minutes in. Beloit's biggest lead was 46-35 at the 14:04 mark before DU started chipping away at the deficit.
Dominican pulled to within two points with just over five minutes remaining but the Buccaneers pushed their advantage back up to 67-60 with 2:31 left. The Stars came back again and trailed by three with the ball with under ten seconds left. But a missed three-pointer and two free throws by James Lazarcik made it 71-66 with less than a second left, securing the win. DU made a half-court three as the buzzer sounded for the final score.
Steve McAfee, Jr. had 30 points, tying a career high, while Lazarcik finished with 14. After shooting just 33% in the opening half the Bucs blistered the nets at a 60% clip in the second.
Beloit stays on the road Thursday night, traveling to Milwaukee to take on Wisconsin Lutheran College. Action begins at 7:00 p.m.
