Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Softball team split their Midwest Conference doubleheader with Lawrence University at the Strong Complex Softball Field Saturday, winning the opener in dramatic fashion 2-1 in eight innings before dropping the nightcap 5-4.
In the first game, Jen Zucker kept the Vikings at bay for seven innings, retiring all 21 batters she faced. LU finally got things going in the top of the eighth when a leadoff bunt single and an error put the lead run on second base. Another single put that run on third. After a walk loaded the bases a ground out brought in the first run of the game, unearned.
But the Buccaneers responded in a big way. Tala Cornell led off the bottom of the eigthth with her fifth home run of the season, to centerfield, to tie the game at 1-all. Bethany Stavrakas followed with a single and was sacrificed to second by Megan Salm. A wild pitch moved her to third before Kandace Fox was walked. Emily Dorjath then delivered the walk-off game-winner with a solid single.
Cornell and Stavrakas each had two hits in the game. Zucker got the win, giving up only those three eighth-inning hits while striking out seven and walking one.
In game two, Kandace Fox got Beloit off to a good start with a three-run home run in the bottom of the first. Lawrence got on the board in the third with an unearned run and made it 3-2 with another run in the fourth. the Bucs answered in the bottom of fourth with an unearned run of their own. After Dorjath doubled she scored from second when Ashleigh Gasparola reach on an error.
But the Vikings tied things up with a pair of runs in the fifth and then got what proved to be the game-winner with two out in the seventh. The Bucs had runners in scoring position in both the sixth and seventh innings but could not even it up.
Cornell had three hits in the game while Stavrakas had two.
Beloit plays it's final scheduled home game of the season on Wednesday when they host Carroll University for Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day. First pitch is at 3:00 p.m.
