Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Baseball team opened Midwest Conference play at The Ballpark at Strong Stadium on Saturday with a 2-0, 7-0 sweep of Lawrence University.

In the opener the two teams battled through five quick innings before the Bucs broke through in the sixth when Grant Henricksen hit a sacrifice fly to center to plate Matt Meade with the first run of the game.  The Vikings tried to answer in both the seventh and eighth innings, putting the tying run on third.  But both times Beloit made the plays to hold their slim advantage.  The Buccaneers added an insurance run in the eighth when Will Mack scored on an error with two out to make it 2-0.

Andrew Edwards pitched seven-plus strong innings for the win, giving up just three hits while striking out four and walking one.  Henricksen finished up for the save, allowing one hit.  Mack and Meade both had two hits.

In game two Beloit jumped on top in the first inning and never looked back.  Edwards drove in Jerrick Habecker, who led off with a double, to plate the only run the Bucs would need.  The Buccaneers made it 4-0 in the fourth with an RBI double by Ethan Blumenthal, a run-scoring groundout by Henricksen and an RBI single from Edwards.

Beloit added one run in the sixth when Henricksen drove in Habecker and two more in the seventh, both unearned, with RBIs going to Meade on a groundout and Henricksen on a bases-loaded walk.

Ryan Kaveney pitched seven innings of one-hit ball for the win, striking out eight, before Jim Leyhane finished the shutout with two innings of two-hit ball.  Habecker had three hits in the second game, including a pair of doubles, and reached base in seven of his eight plate appearances in the doubleheader.  He added three walks and two hit-by-pitches.  Edwards also had three hits while Blumenthal and Henricksen had two each.

The Bucs will try to complete the series sweep on Sunday at The Ballpark when they again host the Vikings.  The games were scheduled to be played in Appleton but poor field conditions forced the change of venue.  First pitch is at 1:00 p.m.
