Waukesha, WI -- The Beloit College Women's Basketball team came up painfully short in a 75-74 overtime loss at Carroll University on Wednesday night.
The Pioneers got an old-fashioned three-point play with 30 seconds left in the extra period and it stood up for the win despite a late basket by Beloit.
Neither team could gain control early before a series of runs highlighted the final minutes of the opening half. The Bucs went on a 14-4 run to grab a 24-15 lead with 6:18 left but CU answered with a 9-0 run to tie it up at 24 at the 4:03 mark. Beloit had the last run, out-scoring Carroll 10-4 in the final four minutes to take a 34-28 lead into halftime.
CU came out of the break on a 10-2 run to take a 38-36 lead four minutes into the second half and the teams traded mini runs over the next seven minutes. The score was even at 53-all with 6:22 left before the Buccaneers went on an 8-0 run to move in front 61-53 with 2:14 left. But Carroll came storming back with a 10-0 run to take a slim 63-61 lead into the final minute. Taylor Grace Silar hit two free throws with eight seconds left to tie it at 64 and force overtime.
The game stayed tight in OT until the Pioneers' three-point play with 30 seconds remaining. Jenna Larson made a layin off a loose ball with two seconds left but that was as close as the Bucs could get.
Lana Wieseman led Beloit with 18 points and 11 rebounds while Larsen finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Lauren McNanna added 13 points and Kandace Fox 11 with six assists. The Buccaneers shot 56.3% for the game, including 4-6 from three-point.
