De Pere, WI -- The Beloit College Men's Basketball team fell behind early and could never catch up in a 66-49 loss in the Midwest Conference-opener at St. Norbert College on Wednesday night.
James Lazarcik scored the first basket of the game 32 seconds into the opening half for the only lead of the night for the Bucs. SNC built their lead to 18-8 at the 8:24 mark and stretched it to 28-14 five minutes later before going into the half ahead 33-22. The Green Knights stretched their advantage to 17 at 39-22 three-plus minutes into the second half before the Buccaneers put together an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to 11 at 13:21 on Steve McAfee's jumper. But St. Norbert built the lead back up to 19 over the next five minutes and had their largest lead at 60-39 with 4:39 remaining. Beloit got no closer than 15 in the final minutes.
Shooting and turnovers were problems for the Bucs. They shot just 32.7% from the field after hitting over 55% the last two games. They also committed 17 turnovers and hit just 13-19 free throws.
McAfee led Beloit with 16 points and Lazarcik had 13. Both grabbed nine rebounds. The numbers were both career-highs for McAfee.
The Bucs return home on Saturday when they host Monmouth College at 5:00 p.m. in Flood Arena.
