Buccaneers Fall Just Short of Big Upset to Open Season

November 17, 2012 at 9:09 pm

Whitewater, WI -- The Beloit College Men's Basketball team came up just short of a huge upset as they opened their 2012-13 season, dropping a 75-68 decision at 3rd-ranked UW-Whitewater on Saturday night.

The Warhawks are the defending NCAA Division III National Champions.

Beloit scored the first eight points of the game and had what would be their biggest lead of the night at 20-10 nine minutes into the contest.  UWW came back and pulled to within 20-17 at the 8:46 mark before taking their first lead at 6:07, 24-23.  But the Bucs closed the half on a 14-6 run to lead 37-30 at the break.

Beloit held a narrow lead through the first 11 minutes of the second half until Whitewater grabbed their first lead since the opening half at 60-59 with 8:37 remaining.  The game went back and forth for the next three minutes until the Warhawks took the lead for good at the 5:10 mark, increasing it to six with 2:01 left.  Tyler Butke's basket with 1:45 remaining brought Beloit back within four but that was as close as they'd get as UWW closed out the game.

James Lazarcik had a double-double with 23 points and 15 rebounds while Butke added 22.  Steve McAfee scored 14 with eight rebounds in his first collegiate game.

The Buccaneers have a short turnaround before opening their home season on Tuesday night when they host Lakeland College in Flood Arena.  Tipoff is at 7:00 p.m.
