The Beloit College Department of Athletics took in a Midwest Conference high of over $1,500 during the recently completed Play for the Cure Week, which ran from September 28 thru October 7.
Spearheaded by Director of Athletics & Recreation Peggy Carl and Marketing & Promotions Intern Tami Magner, the big day of the week for the Bucs came on September 29, Homecoming, when Football, Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, and Women’s Tennis hosted home events. Because they weren’t playing at home during Homecoming Weekend, the Volleyball squad hosted their Play for the Cure event at their match against Cornell College on October 5.
For the Homecoming Football Game at Strong Stadium, there were “Making Strides” pink bracelets and lapel pins for sale. In addition the Football Parents Club sold pink-frosted cupcakes. A “Wall of Hope” was also built featuring pink ribbon cards that were purchased for a donation and an “83-second Drill” was held at halftime to pass the hat for donations (83 is the number of Wisconsin men, women and children diagnosed each day with some form of cancer). All proceeds from the day went to the American Cancer Society.
Athletics from every Buccaneer team competing that day wore some form of pink, from pre-game t-shirts to wristbands and socks. Even the athletic tape was pink.
The MWC will continue the initiative throughout the 2012-2013 season, with the Winter initiative running from February 1-10 and the Spring from April 12-21. All proceeds from “Play for the Cure” will be donated to various cancer charities for research into its cause, prevention and cure.
