Late Comeback Effort Falls Inches Short

September 22, 2012 at 5:10 pm

Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Football team dropped a 13-7 Midwest Conference game to Grinnell College at Strong Stadium.  But for the lack of less than an inch the result may have been different.

GC struck first with a 50-yard field early in the opening quarter before the Bucs grabbed a 7-3 lead at the 1:56 mark on Zach Draus' five-yard run.  The Pioneers then regained the lead on a pass play at 6:36 of the second quarter to lead 10-7 at the break.  Grinnell increased their lead to 13-7 at 9:54 of the third quarter on another field goal.

The excitement for the Buccaneers started with 3:44 left in regulation when they blocked another field goal try by GC and took over at their own 15.  Draus converted a third down run to keep the drive alive at the 30 before Will Coyne hit Dillon Hess on a 32-yard pass play that got Beloit into Grinnell territory at the 38.  A couple of rushes made it third and ten with 54 seconds left before Coyne hit Lukeson Versulien with a nine-yard pass, making it fourth and two.  But Coyne's rush on fourth down came up less than an inch short at the Pioneer 29 and Grinnell ran out the final 47 seconds.

The Bucs out-gained Grinnell 315 to 217, including 114-53 on the ground.

Coyne finished with 202 yards passing, 100 of those yards to Hess, who caught seven passes.  Draus led the rushing attack with 61 yards.  On defense, Zach Bock had nine tackles while Daniel Collins added eight.  Derrell Carter had the lone sack of the game and Tyler Coleman intercepted a pass.

Beloit stays at home for another week when they host Cornell College next Saturday for Homecoming.  Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m.
