Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Baseball team kept themselves alive in the race for a spot in the Midwest Conference Tournament on Sunday, winning game two over Lawrence University 9-0 at The Ballpark at Strong Stadium. The Bucs dropped game one 4-0.
The script was much the same as Saturday's split in Appleton, with Beloit falling by shutout in the opener before bouncing back to win the nightcap.
The Buccaneers scored all the runs they'd need in the opening inning Sunday, with Jordan Jaenicke scoring on a balk and Alex Jennings driving in Evan Mascitti with a groundout. They increased the lead to 5-0 with three in the second. Jake Parrott scored the first run of the inning and then Jennings drove in Jaenicke and Mascitti with a wind-blown double to right.
Beloit kept going with two more in the third. Sean Little drove in the Alex Lawrence with a groundout and then Jaenicke hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Will Mack and make 7-0. They tacked on the eighth run in the fourth on Emory Nelms' sacrifice fly to center and closed out the scoring in the sixth when Nelms singled in Jennings.
Jim Leyhane was the beneficiary of the run support, pitching five-plus innings of three-hit ball, striking out one and walking one, to record his first collegiate victory. Al Loth threw the last four innings, giving up one hit while striking out seven and walking one, to get his fifth save of the season.
Jaenicke finished with two hits in the game.
In the opener, the Vikings shut down the Buccaneers for the second time in four games. Beloit had five hits, two of them in the third, and stranded three runners in scoring position. LU scored once in the fourth, twice in the fifth, and one more in the ninth for the win.
The Bucs have a week before finishing up the MWC portion of their season with a four-game series against Ripon College. Beloit plays at Ripon next Saturday and hosts the Red Hawks on Sunday at The Ballpark. Action begins both days at 1:00 p.m.
