Kissimmee, FL -- The Beloit College Softball team played a pair of close games on Thursday but came out on the short end in both, falling to Hiram University 6-3 and University of Mount Union 3-2. Both squads are from Ohio.
In the opener against Hiram, the Terriers built a 5-0 lead through the first four innings before the Buccaneers got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a fielder's choice RBI by Laura Byrne, scoring Kandace Fox.
Hiram answered that run with one of their own in the top of the fifth to move up 6-1. Beloit tried to rally back in the sixth, scoring twice. Byrne and Katy Sandt knocked in the runs to pull back within three.
After HC didn't score in the top of the seventh the Buccaneers got two runners on with one out in the bottom of the inning, bringing the tying run to the plate, but a ground out and a strikeout ended it.
Against Mount Union, the Raiders scored twice in the first and another in the third to move up 3-0. Beloit cut into the lead with a run in the fourth when Emily Dorjath drove in Kourtney Kingslien.
Megan Salm kept UMU at bay over the final innings but the Buccaneers couldn't get anything going. In the seventh Lisa McClure doubled to lead off the inning and went to third on an error. Jennifer Scalze drove her in with a safety squeeze to cut the lead to one but that was as close as Beloit would get.
The Bucs close out their Spring Trip on Friday afternoon with two more games, playing Albion College of Michigan at 1:00 p.m. and the College of St. Benedict from Minnesota at 3:00 p.m.
