Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Women's Basketball team couldn't overcome a 44-19 disadvantage on the scoreboard in the second half and dropped their season opener to nationally-ranked Carthage College 80-44 in Flood Arena on Friday night.

The Lady Reds came into the game ranked ninth in the pre-season poll and 11th in the USA Today/ESPN Top 25 pre-season poll.

Beloit hung fairly close with CC through the first half, with the lead at only 24-15 with 6:43 remaining before the break on two Diana Sopkowicz free throws.  But the Lady Reds went on a 12-4 run over the next five minutes to stretch their lead to 36-19 with 1:34 left.  Carthage led 36-25 at the break.

The Buccaneers pulled back to within nine at 36-27 just over 30 seconds into the second half on a Kandace Fox three-pointer but the Lady Reds took off on a big 20-2 run over the next seven minutes to move up by 27 midway through the half at 56-29.  Diana Jacklin had eight points for CC during the run while Cailee Corcoran scored seven.

Beloit would get no closer than 23 the rest of the way.  The biggest Carthage lead came with 1:44 left at 78-39.

Fox and Sopkowicz led the Bucs with eight points apiece.  Jacklin paced the Lady Reds with 18 while also grabbing a game-high eight rebounds.  Corcoran added 12 and Dani Ripkey 10.

The Buccaneers have a few days off before hitting the road next Tuesday, traveling just down I39 to face stateline neighbor Rockford College.  Tipoff is at 7:00 p.m.
