After more than three weeks of work and several days of drying, the Flood Arena floor is almost ready for foot traffic. The first shoes to touch the new floor will belong to Coach Dawn Redd and the Buccaneers volleyball squad, who will practice in Flood on Thursday afternoon. Noon ballers and the rest of campus can begin using the newly sanded and repainted floor on Friday.
Basketball coach Brian Vraney was on hand for Monday's unveiling to a group that included Peggy Carl, President Bierman, Bill Flanagan, and Michael Brady, Bruce Hamilton and Michael Cain from Physical Plant (who oversaw the work). The group, who walked the new surface in their socks, saw a floor stamped with a large blue and gold "B" at center court, and baselines emblazoned with the Buccaneer name and logo, as well as "Flood Arena." Carl said the firm who did the work spent three solid weeks on the project, including Saturdays. They sanded away the old surface, applied a new finish, measured, stenciled and painted, and then finished the floor with a buffing and finishing coat late last week.
It was, in fact, the second painting in Flood this summer. The athletics staff also personally painted the workout facility in May, just after commencement (kudos go to Breeze Jacobson for the new logos on the walls). And athletics may not be done yet. Carl says she's hoping to see other painting completed in the arena this fall.
