Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Women's Basketball team nearly let one slip through their fingers on Wednesday night in Flood Arena. But a late rally gave them a 63-59 win over Lawrence University and kept them in the Midwest Conference Tournament picture.
Having the league bye as the regular season closes this Saturday, Beloit now waits to see what happens in those games. If they get in to the Tourney as the #4 seed, they will play on Friday, February 27, in the Tourney semifinals against the #1 seed.
On Wednesday night that prospect didn't look good early as the Vikings, who haven't won in conference play since the 2007-08 season, built a 17-8 lead in the first six minutes of the game.
The Buccaneers went on an 11-2, five-minute run to tie the score up at 19-all at the 9:43 mark but LU built their lead back up again to eight at 34-26 at halftime.
The Bucs scored the first seven points of the second half to grab a one-point lead at 35-34 just over four minutes in.
The game stayed close from that point until Lawrence used a 7-2 spurt to open a five-point advantage with 3:15 left in regulation. The Buccaneers then went on an 8-2 run, capped by a Diana Sopkowicz three-point play, to take the lead for good with 41 seconds remaining.
Sarah Stariha hit a pair of free throws with 17 seconds left to ice the win.
Faith Jones led the way with 16 points while Sopkowicz had 13. Amanda Moore had 12 points and nine rebounds and Mary Parker, in her final game in Flood Arena, had ten points, seven rebounds and five steals.
