Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Women's Basketball team was glad to be back in Flood Arena for just the second time this season on Wednesday and it was even better after finishing off a 78-70 overtime win over Notre Dame College.
The Buccaneers converted 11 of 12 free throws in the extra period to put the game away, outscoring NDC 17-9.
The Falcons used three-pointers to build a seven-point lead at the midway mark of the opening half before Beloit went on a 12-0 run over the next seven minutes to grab a five-point advantage with 2:50 remaining in the half. The Bucs led 31-28 at the break.
Beloit built their lead as large as 12 points in the second half, that coming with 13:55 left at 45-33, before Notre Dame put together their own 12-0 run to tie it at 45-all with 10:50 remaining.
The Falcons retook the lead at the 6:39 mark and built it up to four points several times, the last at 61-57 with 2:23 left. But four free throws by the Buccaneers in the final 1:41 tied it at 61 and forced the overtime. NDC missed a three-pointer at the buzzer that would have won the game.
In overtime, after the Falcons opened with a three-pointer, Diana Sopkowicz and Sarah Stariha both hit layins, with Stariha's giving the Buccaneers the lead for good at the 3:51 mark. The free throws then sealed the victory.
Sopkowicz finished with 24 points to lead the Bucs while Amanda Moore had a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Mary Parker chipped in 13 points and nine rebounds. Beloit hit 26 of 35 free throws for the game.
Beloit has little time to celebrate the new year as they are back on the court on Saturday when they host Rockford College in a 1:00 p.m. tip in Flood Arena.
