Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Softball team got back on the field Wednesday and scored a 5-3 win over Wheaton College in the first game of a home-opening doubleheader. Wheaton took game two 13-3.
Laura Byrne provided the winning blow in the opener with a two-run triple to the corner in right field. She then caught a pop-up in foul territory for the final out of the game in the top of the seventh.
The Thunder jumped on top 2-0 in the first before Katy Sandt cut the lead in half in the second with her first career home run, a solo shot to left.
The Bucs took a 3-2 lead in the fifth with a pair of unearned runs. McKenzie Falker drove in the second run of the inning with a two-out single. Wheaton then tied it up at 3-all in the sixth on a solo home run, setting the stage for Byrne's heroics.
Byrne's blast scored Lisa McClure and Nicole Oddo, who both reached on fielder's choices.
Sandt got the win on the mound, scattering six hit while striking out two and walking none. Byrne, Falker and Allegera Stanton each had two hits.
In game two Wheaton broke up a scoreless game with four runs in the third. Beloit got a run back in the bottom of the third on Sarah Stariha's RBI single but the Thunder added three more in the fourth and another in the fifth to make it 8-1.
The Buccaneers got two runs in the fifth on a suicide squeeze by Byrne and a run-scoring base hit by Falker. But WC tacked on two in the sixth and three in the seventh to close out the win.
Sandt took the loss. Stariha had two hits.
The Bucs are now off until next Tuesday when they travel to UW-Platteville for a doubleheader with the Pioneers. First pitch is at 4:00 p.m.
