Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Men's Basketball team made their 2009-10 home debut on Saturday afternoon in Flood Arena, but it wasn't what they hoped for.
Despite hanging close to the final buzzer, the Buccaneers fell to Benedictine University 74-66.
The game was tight through the opening half before Benedictine spurted to a six-point advantage at 20-14 midway through. But an 11-5 run by Beloit tied the score at 25 with 6:50 remaining before the half. BU used an 8-1 run in the final four minutes to lead 35-28 at the break.
The Eagles stretched their lead into double figures through the first eight minutes of the second half but the Bucs refused to lay down, pulling as close as four at 52-48 with seven minutes left. BU pushed it back to a 12-point lead with 3:22 remaining and then made free throws down the stretch to hold off Beloit, who could draw no closer than six in the final minutes.
David Bremner had a game-high 19 points to ead three Bucs in double figures. Travis Towns added 17 while Patrick Kenny had 13 with a team-high six rebounds and five assists.
The Buccaneers are back in Flood Arena on Tuesday night when they host Milwaukee School of Engineering in a 7:30 p.m. non-conference game.
