Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Baseball team split their doubleheader with Ripon College on Sunday at The Ballpark at Strong Stadium, winning 11-7 before falling 7-2. But in the process the Bucs dropped their Midwest Conference-opening series 3 games to one.
The Buccaneers had a big lead in the opener, lost it, and then rallied late to post the win.
Beloit got two in the first on a Mike Ross RBI single and a Jordan Jaenicke fielder's choice. After Ripon scored a run in the second the Bucs got two more in the bottom of the inning on run-scoring singles by Scott Slubowski and Ryan Schmitz to go up 4-1.
Slubowski had an RBI groundout in the fourth and Rick Chernik an RBI double in the fifth before scoring on a passed ball to make it 7-1.
But the Red Hawks tied it up at 7-all in the top of the sixth with six runs.
Beloit sealed the win with four in the bottom of the eighth to break the tie. Slubowski drove in his third run of the game followed by Schmitz's second run-batted in. Hunter Nelson then hit a run-scoring single before Schmitz scored on an error to complete the rally.
Schmitz got the win on the mound with 3.2 innings of two-hit ball, striking out eight.
In game two, the Red Hawks scored four unearned runs in the top of the first to take control early. They added a run in the fourth before Slubowski got Beloit on the board with a two-run single in the fifth.
But that was as close as the Bucs would get as RC tacked on a pair of eighth inning runs to nail down the win.
The Buccaneers are off until next Saturday when they open a four-game MWC series at Carroll University in Waukesha. First pitch is at 1:00 p.m.
