Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Men's Lacrosse team clinched a spot in the Midwest Lacrosse Conference Tournament with a dominating 21-7 win over Fontbonne University Thursday at Strong Stadium.
The Bucs outscored the Griffins 5-1 in the first period to take control of the contest and never looked back. Aidan Whinnery scored three times while Mike Spencer and Zach Carner also added goals in the opening frame.
Beloit poured it on with six goals in the second quarter. After three assists in the first quarter Grant Oie got things rolling in the second with a score six minutes in. He was followed by Whinnery (Liam O'Connor), Matt Kelly back-to-back (Carner, Spencer), Matt Lee (first career goal) and Spencer. Fontbonne scored three times in the quarter to make it 11-4 at the break.
The Buccaneers came out of the lockerroom flying for the second half and scored eight times in the third quarter while holding FBU to just two goals. Whinnery scored three more goals while Nick Meisberger had two. Also scoring in the period for Beloit were Kelly, Oie and O'Connor to make it 19-6 entering the fourth.
Fontbonne scored the first goal of the final quarter to close out their scoring before Carner (Whinnery) and Kevin Joswiak (Whinnery/first career goal) finished up for the final score.
Jake Wallace had 11 ground balls, tying for the second most in a game in the short history of Beloit Men's Lacrosse, while Kelly had five. Oie's seven assists tied the all-time single-game Beloit record and Whinnery's seven goals tied for the second-most in a game. John Murphy got the win in net with seven saves, the first of four goaltenders used by the Bucs.
Beloit continues its regular season-ending homestand on Saturday when they host the University of Dubuque at 1:00 p.m..
