Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Men's Lacrosse team didn't let a little cold or a partially frozen field slow them down on Wednesday night at Strong Stadium, using a big second period on the way to a 15-10 win over Benedictine University.
The Bucs scored the first three goals of the game - by Aidan Whinnery, Zach Carner and Jacob Pritscher - to jump out quick but the Eagles got the next two to pull back within one. Liam O'Connor's goal got Beloit back up by two but BU scored the last two goals of the period to make it 4-4 after one.
That tie disappeared in a big way in the second period with six consecutive Buccaneer goals. Tommy Porkka and Whinnery each scored twice while Matt Kelly and Pritscher also joined in to make it 10-4 with just under three minutes left in the half. After Benedictine broke the run, Porkka got his third goal of the period with 34 seconds left to make it an 11-5 advantage at the break.
The Buccaneers pushed their lead out to seven goals in the third with Porkka's fourth goal of the game and Carner's second sandwiched around an Eagle score to make it 13-6 heading to the fourth.
Benedictine made a little push in the fourth, scoring four goals, but tallies by Austin Hyatt and Porkka maintained a comfortable lead for the win.
Porkka finished with five goals and two assists while Whinnery had three goals and three assists. O'Connor added three assists to go with his goal. Trevor Kenahan made 12 saves in net for the win.
Beloit now heads for, hopefully, warmer weather with a pair of games in Virginia next week for their Spring Trip. They play Kenyon College in Ashland on Tuesday before taking on Southern Virginia University on Thursday.
