Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Men's Lacrosse team saved the best for last in their 8-7 season-opening win over Elmhurst College at Strong Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Jacob Pritscher scored with 1:03 left in the fourth period, assisted by Matt Kelly, to give the Buccaneers the win. Kelly had tallied unassisted just over a minute earlier to knot the score at 7-all.
Beloit jumped up 2-0 in the first period. Zach Carner got the first goal of the season at 5:29, assisted by Tommy Porkka, before Aidan Whinnery, assisted by Liam O'Connor, scored at 1:48.
Elmhurst came storming back in the second period with four goals to take a 4-3 lead at the break. The first two Bluejay goals came with the man advantage. Whinnery scored his second goal, assisted by Pritscher, at 6:36 to tie it at three before Elmhurst scored at 3:56 for the halftime advantage.
The teams entered the fourth period tied at five after Carner scored his second goal, assisted by Xavier Ward, and Porkka scored unassisted at the 5:59 mark in the third period.
Porkka made it two straight scores just over four minutes into the fourth before EC grabbed a 7-6 lead on back-to-back scores, the second a man up, which set the stage for Kelly and Pritscher's late-game heroics.
Trevor Kenahan made nine saves in net for the win.
The Bucs won both the shots and ground balls game, 30-26 on shots and 23-18 on ground balls. They also won 11 faceoffs to Elmhurst's five and had eight clears to the Bluejays' seven.
The Buccaneers stay at home with a Wednesday game against Fontbonne University at Strong. Action begins at 4:30 p.m.
