Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Men's Lacrosse team had been toiling away on the road for their entire existence until Saturday afternoon at Strong Stadium. They then made that home opener a big one with their first-ever win, topping DePauw University 16-1.
The Bucs took control from the beginning on a cool day in front of approximately 150-200 fans.
Aidan Whinnery scored the first two home goals, the first at the 8:40 mark, assisted by Xavier Ward, and the second off an assist from Jacob Pritscher in the last 30 seconds of the quarter for a 2-0 lead after one.
Beloit added three more in the second period. Thomas Porkka hit the back of the net four minutes in before Whinnery got his third goal of the game on a Jack Jenkins assist. Pritscher then made it 5-0 at the break with an unassisted score at 5:43.
The Buccaneers opened the scoring floodgates in the third period. Ryan Hazuka, assisted by Porkka, started things at 13:38 followed by Porkka, assisted by Liam O'Connor, at 11:20; Whinnery, again from O'Connor, at 10:25; and then Pritscher, from O'Connor on his third straight assist, at 9:29. After a five-minute lull Pritscher scored at 4:24 and Hazuka and Porkka tallied at 3:32 and 2:48, respectively, to make it 12-0 heading into the fourth.
O'Connor got in the goal-scoring column 40 seconds into the fourth before Jack Jenkins got in the act four minutes later. The Tigers finally got on the board at the 7:34 mark to make it a 14-1 game. O'Connor scored a man-up goal at 6:09, assisted by Whinnery, and Xavier Ward closed out the scoring, assisted by O'Connor, at 3:18.
Trevor Kenahan pitched a shutout for the first 52 minutes before DU finally solved him. Jacob Mayer finished up the last seven minutes, making three saves.
The Buccaneers head back to the road on Tuesday when they play at Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon. Action begins at 4:30 p.m.
