Atlanta, GA -- The Beloit College Men's Lacrosse team came up just short for the third time in as many games this season on Wednesday night, falling 9-8 at Oglethorpe University in the second of three Spring Trip games.
The Buccaneers jumped on top with the only goal of the opening quarter when Ryan Hazuka, off an assist from Liam O'Connor, hit the back of the net at the 6:07 mark. Oglethorpe bounced back with two goals to open the second period by Xavier Ward scored the first goal of his career, unassisted, at 13:20 to tie it up at 2. The Stormy Petrels retook the lead at 9:23 before Hazuka got his second goal of the game a short time later to tie it at 3-all. OU then scored three unanswered goals to seemingly break open the game but Hazuka answered with 30 seconds left in the half, completing his second hat trick in three games, followed by a Jacob Pritscher goal with three seconds left to make it 6-5, Oglethorpe, at the break.
The Stormy Petrels did take charge with three goals in the third quarter while shutting down the Bucs to take a 9-5 lead heading into the fourth. Beloit started a rally just over a minute into the final quarter when Aidan Whinnery scored unassisted. He scored again two minutes later, assisted by Pritscher, to pull the Buccaneers within two. But Jack Jenkins unassisted goal at 7:17 was as close as Beloit would get as the teams went scoreless for the rest of regulation.
Trevor Kenahan had six saves in goal for the Bucs.
Beloit looks to close their trip on a high note on Saturday afternoon when they take on Piedmont College in Demerest, Georgia. Action begins at 1:00 p.m. EST.
