Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Basketball team tried to get one more victory for their seven-person senior class but fell short in a season-ending 75-71 loss to Cornell College in Flood Arena on Saturday.
Seniors Joe Poshepny, Chris Bremner, Max King, Steve Dowden, Mitch Carlson, Tyler Butke and James Lazarcik all played their final game for the Bucs.
Cornell led by eight seven minutes in to the game but Beloit fought back to tie it at 15-all with 8:52 left. The Rams again jumped in front, this time by six, at the 5:05 mark but the Buccaneers played the last five minutes on a 16-8 run to lead 37-35 at halftime.
The first 10 minutes of the second half was close, with five ties, until CC put together a 9-3 run to take a 65-57 lead with 4:56 remaining. Beloit got back within two at 70-68 after a quick 7-0 run but Cornell hit five free throws in the final 23 seconds to hold on for the win.
Rudy Bentley led the way with 18 points and also had five assists while Lazarcik had 16 with eight rebounds. Lazarcik finishes his career as the #7 scorer in Beloit history with 1,292 points and the #2 rebounder with 752. Steve McAfee added 13 points and Butke 11 with eight rebounds.
The Bucs shot 44.6% for the game, including 40% in the second half, while Cornell finished at 51.2%, 55% in the opening half. CC was also 27-35 from the free throw line and Beloit 15-20.
