January 11, 2014 at 2:48 pm

James LazarcikJacksonville, IL -- The Beloit College Men's Basketball team used a first half run to build a lead and then held off Illinois College in the final minute for an 80-75 win on Saturday afternoon.

The Buccaneers, who led from opening tip to final horn, charged away from a 19-all tie midway through the first half with a 21-6 run that gave them a 15-point advantage.  They led 45-35 at the half behind James Lazarcik's 25 points on 10-10 shooting from the field, including his first career three-pointer, and 11 from Steve McAfee.

The Blueboys used an 11-5 run coming out of halftime to pull back within 50-46 six minutes into the second half.  But Beloit recovered to push their lead back up to 10 points several times.

The Bucs led 72-62 with 2:29 remaining before IC hit a pair of baskets to cut the deficit back to six with just over a minute left.  The Blueboys then hit three straight three- pointers in the final 39 seconds to keep the pressure on.  But the Buccaneers responded with eight straight free throws to hold on for the win.

Lazarcik finished with a career-high 33 points while McAfee had 21 with five assists.  Tyler Butke added seven rebounds and Rudy Bentley six rebounds and six assists.  Beloit shot 56.3% from the field for the game while hitting all 19 of their free throw attempts, setting a team record for most makes from the stripe without a miss.

Beloit looks to keep the momentum going with yet another MWC road game on Tuesday night at Carroll University.  Tipoff is at 5:30 p.m.
