Appleton, WI -- It got a little too close in the final minutes but the Beloit College Men's Basketball team held on for their fourth straight Midwest Conference win on Saturday, topping Lawrence University 76-72.
The four-game winning streak is the longest since early in the 2001-02 season when the team put together six consecutive wins.
The opening half was tight throughout, with Lawrence finally getting some breathing room with an 8-3 run to take a 21-16 lead with 8:59 left. The Buccaneers responded with a 12-4 run over the next four-plus minutes to go up 28-25 at the 4:12 mark. Beloit led 34-29 at the break.
The Bucs came out of the lockerroom with a 13-6 run to move up 47-35 less than four minutes in and led by as many as 16 at the 9:50 mark. But the Vikings got themselves back in the game with a 23-9 run to pull within two at 70-68 with 3:00 remaining. LU was still within two with 1:03 left and the score 74-72 but Michael Horton made a pair of free throws and then made a steal to effectively end it with three seconds remaining to secure the victory.
James Lazarcik had a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds, as did Horton with 14 points and 11 assists. David Bremner added 16 points and Tyler Butke 14.
Beloit looks to continue its late-season drive on Wednesday night at Carroll University. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
