Beloit, WI -- After a thrilling last second win on Friday night, the Beloit College Men's Basketball team thought an overtime game might be just as thrilling for the Hall of Honor Day crowd. And they made it just that in an 80-76 win over Monmouth College on Saturday in Flood Arena.
The Bucs held the lead for most of the opening half until a late 9-2 run by the Fighting Scots put them in front 29-25 with 2:19 left. But Beloit closed the half on a 5-0 run, with Max King's three-pointer at the 10-second mark putting the Buccaneers back up 30-29 at the break.
The Buccaneers pushed their lead as high as seven early in the second half before MC came back and made it tight the rest of regulation. There were nine ties during the second 20 minutes. Monmouth took a two-point lead with 48 seconds left before David Bremner layed the ball in at the ten-second mark to tie it at 68-all. The Fighting Scots missed a three-pointer with three second remaining.
In the five-minute overtime the teams traded points to keep it tied at 70 just over two minutes. The Bucs then went on a 10-3 run over the final three minutes that sealed it. Michael Horton had five of the squad's 12 points in the extra period while Joe Poshepny hit a big three-pointer with 36 seconds left that stretched the lead to six.
Bremner led Beloit with 19 points and a team-high seven rebounds. James Lazarcik scored 15 and had three blocked shots before fouling out. Horton finished with 14 and six assists. Poshepny and Tyler Butke added nine apiece.
The Buccaneers look to keep the momentum going on Wednesday as they host St. Norbert College to end a five-game homestand. Tipoff is at 5:00 p.m.
