Monmouth, IL -- The Beloit College Men's Basketball team held on Friday night to post their first victory of the 2011-12 season, topping Monmouth College 64-61.
The teams traded baskets early before the Buccaneers broke away from an 8-all tie with a 10-2, four-minute run that put them up 18-10 midway through the half. Beloit still led 22-18 six minutes before halftime before the Fighting Scots closed the half on a 17-8 run to lead 35-30 at the break.
The Bucs opened the second half by scoring six of the first eight points to pull within one at 37-36 and then gradually overtook MC over the next six minutes to take a two-point lead at 49-47 with just under nine minutes remaining.
Beloit still held their two-point advantage at 60-58 with 47 seconds left before James Lazarcik hit a pair of free throws to push the lead to four at 62-58 at the 34-second mark. a three-pointer by Monmouth with 17 seconds left cut the advantage to 62-61 but Michael Horton hit two free throws to close out the scoring two seconds later.
The Fighting Scots missed a long three as time ran down and Beloit grabbed the rebound to secure the win.
David Bremner had 17 points to pace the Bucs while Horton added 16 with five assists. Lazarcik finished with nine rebounds.
The Buccaneers look to ride their momentum into Illinois College on Saturday when they take on the Blueboys at 3:00 p.m.
