Monmouth, IL -- Behind senior Patrick Kenny's career-high 25 points, the Beloit College Men's Basketball team kept themselves in the Midwest Conference Tournament hunt with a 76-63 win over Monmouth College on Saturday.
The Bucs sit at 7-7 in the MWC, tied with Lake Forest. Grinnell and Carroll are both at 8-6 with Lawrence 9-6 and Illinois College 9-5. Beloit still has games left with Lawrence and Carroll, both at home.
Much like last Wednesday at Carroll, the Buccaneers spotted the Fighting Scots the first six points of the game before going on a big 18-2 run to go up ten at the 11:40 mark. MC pulled back to within four with 3:40 left but a 6-1 spurt to close the half put Beloit up 30-21 at the break.
The Buccaneers jumped up 41-21 in the first three minutes of the second half but Monmouth put together a 16-4 run to pull back within 45-37 at the 14:14 mark. The Scots were within 56-50 with 9:21 remaining but the Bucs pushed their lead back up to 64-50 with an 8-0 run at 6:49 and MC never got closer than seven the rest of the way.
Besides Kenny's career-day, 18 of which came in the second half, James Lazarcik had 18 points and eight rebounds while Michael Horton added 12. Beloit shot 51% (25-49) for the game.
The Buccaneers take their late-season drive to league-leader and 12th-ranked St. Norbert College on Wednesday night. Action begins at 7:00 p.m.
