Lisle, IL -- The Beloit College Men's Basketball team erased a 15-point, second-half deficit but a late basket gave Benedictine University a 70-69 win in the season-opener on Sunday afternoon.
BU had control of the game nearly from the start, going on a 16-5 rin after Beloit led 4-2 to take an18-9 lead six minutes in. Beloit pulled back to within three at 30-27 at the 5:53 mark before a 13-6 Benedictine run pushed their lead back to ten. The Eagles led 43-33 at the break.
The deficit grew as large as 15 points in the first six minutes of the second half but the Buccaneers put together an 11-2 spurt over four minutes to pull back within 59-53 midway through the half.
After BU had stretched the lead back to eight points at 65-57 with 4:57 left Beloit went on a 12-3 run to take their first lead since very early at 69-68 on a pair of Travis Towns free throws with 39 seconds remaining.
The Eagles retook the lead with 18 seconds left at 70-69. A shot and several putbacks by the Buccaneers fell away as the buzzer sounded.
Towns tied his career high with 32 points, 18 in the second half. David Bremner had 12 and Patrick Kenny 11.
The Buccaneers stay on the road for game #2 of the 2010-11 season when they play at Milwaukee School of Engineering on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.
