Bucs Run Out of Time in Big Come-from-Behind Effort at Knox

October 6, 2012 at 8:10 pm

Galesburg, IL -- The Beloit College Football team kept getting up and fighting back but fell just short in a 35-33 Midwest Conference loss at Knox College on Saturday.

The Bucs opened the scoring on Matias Grande's 33-yard field goal on the opening drive of the game.  KC took the lead with just over five minutes left in the first quarter with a TD before Beloit retook the lead less than a minute into the second quarter when Will Coyne hit Lukeson Versulien with a two-yard scoring pass.  Knox jumped back on top with an interception return TD two minutes later.  The Buccaneers pulled to within one on Grande's second field goal of the half, this one from 37 yards out.  The Prairie Fire increased their lead to 21-13 on a short scoring pass but Coyne ran one in from seven yards out with 23 seconds left in the half to make it 21-20, Knox, at the break.

Knox had the only score of the third quarter on a short scoring pass to lead 28-20 heading into the fourth quarter and then got a 16-yard run at 9:59 of the fourth to increase their lead to 35-20.  But the Bucs still had life left.  Nathan Brault caught a 23-yard scoring pass from Coyne just 19 seconds after KC's score to make it 35-27 and then Dillon Hess caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Coyne at 4:38 to make it a two-point game.  But the conversion pass failed to end the scoring.

Coyne finished with 271 passing yards while having a hand in all four Buccaneer TDs.  Hess caught six passes for 67 yards.  Versulien had another big all-purpose day, accounting for 223 yards, including 169 on kickoff returns.  On defense, Derrell Carter had ten tackles, seven solo, and Beloit's lone sack.  Antonio Jones and Daniel Collins each had eight tackles.

The Buccaneers stay in Illinois for another MWC road game next Saturday, playing at Illinois College in Jacksonville.  Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m.
