Buccaneers Can't Rebound from Early Deficit

October 8, 2011 at 4:53 pm

Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Football team got into an early hole and couldn't quite get themselves back out in a 27-17 loss to Lake Forest College on a Summer-like Saturday afternoon at Strong Stadium.

Lake Forest scored the only points of the first quarter on a short pass but Vince Salucci blocked the point-after - the tenth block kick of his career - and LFC led 6-0 after one.

The Foresters tacked on a 61-yard pass and run less than a minute into the second quarter to make it 13-0 before Mat Kahl booted a 26-yard field goal at the 10:54 mark to make it 13-3.  But Lake Forest scored on a 14-yard pass just over a minute later to lead 20-3 at the break.

Beloit cut into the deficit at 10:24 of the third quarter on a 31-yard Brian Maughn to Derek Carrier scoring pass, their eighth TD hook-up of the season, to make it 20-10.  But LFC answered three minutes later on a one-yard run that capped a nine-play, 60-yard drive to go back up 27-10 thru three.

The Buccaneers scored the only points of the fourth quarter on a Maughn to Carrier scoring play covering 57 yards to close to within 27-17 with 8:09 remaining but that's as close as they'd get.

Maughn finished with 211 yards passing while Carrier caught five passes for 118 yards and the two scores, the fifth time in six games this season he's been over 100 yards receiving and the fourth time he's caught two touchdown passes in a game in 2011.

Terence Steward and Zach Draus led a strong rushing attack for the Bucs with 74 and 73 yards, respectively.  Beloit gained 181 yards on the ground.

Beloit finished with 392 yards of offense while the Foresters totaled 404.

On defense, Salucci finished with ten tackles, eight solo, while Zach Bock had nine.

The Bucs now hit the road for two weeks, playing at Ripon College next Saturday and at Monmouth College on October 22.  They return to Strong Stadium on October 29 against Lawrence University for Senior Day.
