Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Football couldn't get it going on the ground so they happily went to the air in a 29-22 Homecoming Game win over Lake Forest College on Saturday at Strong Stadium.
LFC struck quickly to grab the lead less than three minutes into the contest. Beloit battled back to take a 7-6 lead (LFC missed the point-after) on Dillon Hess' two-yard run.
Eddie Boyd then got his first collegiate score on a 20-yard pass from Brian Maughn late in the second quarter to make it 14-6. But the Foresters responded quickly and tied it on a short pass and the ensuing two-point conversion to make it 14-all at the break.
The Buccaneers jumped back on top midway through the third quarter on a Maughn to Julian Ross 69-yard hook-up for a score. CJ Yoakum turned a botched point-after snap into two points with a conversion run.
Derek Carrier then caught a 23-yard scoring pass from Maughn midway through the fourth quarter to put the Bucs up 29-14 with just 8:30 left.
Lake Forest wouldn't quit and marched down the field, getting a short TD pass and a two-point conversion pass with 6:19 left to make it 29-22. But Beloit ran out the remaining time with several big third down plays for the win.
The Bucs, who had 424 yards in offense, got 355 passing yards from Maughn with the three scoring passes. Julian Ross caught ten passes for 187 yards while Andrew Christensen and Derek Carrier both caught four passes for 64 and 62 yards, respectively.
Ross' 187 yards receiving were just two short of the Beloit single-game record of 189 set by All-American Mike Meteyard against Carroll in 1994.
On defense, Tony Baratti had 13 tackles, nine solo, and grabbed his third interception of the season to go with two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Quentin Layne and Kyle Hansgen each had a sack.
The Bucs stay at home for next Saturday's MWC game, hosting Ripon College in a 1:00 p.m. kickoff at Strong Stadium.
