Jacksonville, IL -- The Beloit College Football team opened their 2009 campaign in Jacksonville, Illinois, on Saturday afternoon with a 39-22 win over MacMurray College.
The Bucs opened the scoring less than two minutes in when Raymond Thomas scored from a yard out. Derek Carrier made it 14-0 early in the second quarter on a seven-yard scoring pass from Brian Maughn.
Andrew Christensen got in on the fun five minutes before the half on a 14-yard pass from Maughn and Odin Grina caught a six-yard scoring toss from Maughn 19 seconds before the break to give the Buccaneers a 26-0 lead at the break.
Thomas scored his second TD of the game, and his career, at 6:27 of the third quarter on a five-yard run before MacMurray got a pair of scores within two minutes of the fourth quarter to close the lead down to 33-14.
Eddie Boyd caught a 20-yard pass from Dillon Hess with 1:59 remaining for Beloit's final score before the Highlanders closed out the scoring with just over a minute left.
Maughn finished with 234 yards passing and the three TDs. Christensen led the rushing attack with 54 yards. Julian Ross caught six passes while Carrier and Christensen each had four receptions.
Defensively, Vince Salucci, Matt Kees and Tony Baratti each had interceptions with Baratti also recovering a fumble and recording two sacks. Salucci had nine tackles and Kyle Hansgen recorded three sacks.
The Bucs hit the Strong Stadium turf for the first time next Saturday night when they host Carroll University in the Midwest Conference opener for both squads. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m.
