Breast Cancer Quick Facts

  • Since the NBCAMJ program began in 1985, mammography rates have more than doubled for women age 50 and older and breast cancer deaths have declined.
  • NBCAM educates women about the importance of early detection. More and more women are getting mammograms to detect breast cancer in its earliest stages. As a result, breast cancer deaths are on the decline. Encourage the women in your life to get mammograms on a regular basis.
  • Excluding cancers of the skin, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, accounting for more than one in four cancers diagnosed in US women.
  • In 2007, approximately 40,460 women are expected to die from breast cancer.
  • Although breast cancer in men is a rare disease (accounting for approximately 1% of breast cancer cases in the US), the incidence rate among males increased 1.0% annually between 1975-2004

The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month program is dedicated to increasing public knowledge about the importance of early detection of breast cancer. Fifteen national public service organizations, professional associations, and government agencies comprise the Board of Sponsors, who work together to ensure that the NBCAM message is heard by thousands of women and their families.  For more information, go to www.NBCAM.org

Amy Grant (O’Neill) graduated with the class of 1997.  Coming to Beloit College from Springfield, Illinois, Amy graduated with a major in Biochemistry.  During her time at Beloit, she achieved academic excellence and was also a stellar Soccer and Track athlete, earning All-MWC honors three times in Track and twice in Soccer.  Additionally, she held every Soccer scoring record.

Amy treasured her work with developmentally challenged adults and children at the Goldie B. Floberg Center in Rockton, later becoming a special education teacher for five years.

During her lengthy battle with breast cancer, Amy participated in numerous fundraising efforts for breast cancer research.

Her husband, Jim, has established an endowed scholarship in her memory at Beloit College.
