Buccaneers Split at Chicago; Go 1-2 in Non-Conference Weekend

April 12, 2014 at 9:05 pm

Chicago, IL -- The Beloit College Baseball team played three games in about 24 hours and came away with a 1-2 record against two non-conference opponents, splitting a doubleheader at the University of Chicago on Saturday after falling to Cornell College in Beloit on Friday.

The Bucs dropped the opener at Chicago 4-3 in 10 innings before winning the nightcap 13-1.  They dropped a 9-5 decision to Cornell.

In Saturday's second game, Beloit broke up a scoreless affair with two runs in the fifth inning.  Adrian Peil scored on a passed ball and Mike Gulve on an error for the lead runs.  Kam Sallee and Tyler Peacock both singled in runs in the sixth to make it 4-0 before, arguably, one of the strangest innings in head coach Dave DeGeorge's career put it away.

The Buccaneers tallied nine runs in the seventh inning to take a 13-0 lead on no hits and two errors and still left the bases loaded.  Zach Jenkins, Sallee, Gulve and Lawrence all got RBIs with bases-loaded walks while Peacock and Peil plated runs with bases-loaded hit-by-pitches.  Two more of the runs scored on errors.  The Maroons scored a run in the bottom of the inning but the game ended early on the 10-run rule.

Joe Loftus got the mound win while Jerrick Habecker notched a three-inning save.

In the opener, UC scored on a single with two outs in the 10th inning for the walk-off win.  Beloit had jumped on top in the third with a pair of runs on a two-run single by Austin Martinez that scored Lawrence and Danny Corral.  But Chicago tied it up with two in the second and then took the lead with another run in the fifth.  The Bucs forced extra innings when Jake Parrott singled in Marcus in the top of the ninth, setting up the Maroons' win an inning later.

Lawrence and Parrott both had two hits in the game.

Back on Friday at The Ballpark at Strong Stadium, after Cornell scored the game's first run in the opening inning, Beloit tied it in the bottom of one on Martinez's sacrifice fly to right, scoring Peil, who opened the inning with a double.

But the Rams scored four runs in the third and two more in the fourth to take a 7-1 lead.  The Buccaneers responded with four unearned runs in the fifth to make it a 7-5 game.  RBIs went to Lawrence, Martinez and Parrott while Peil scored on a wild pitch.  But that was as close as Beloit would get.  CC added an unearned run in the sixth and closed the scoring with another marker in the ninth while shutting down the Bucs.

Lawrence had three hits in the game while Peil had two.

Beloit continues its run of non-conference match-ups on Tuesday when they play a doubleheader at Milwaukee School of Engineering in Milwaukee.  First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
