Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Baseball team did their best to erase a five-run deficit in the bottom of the ninth inning on Wednesday night at Pohlman Field but came up just short in a 7-6 non-conference loss to Rockford College.
Rockford controlled the game for the first eight innings, scoring an unearned run in the first and then adding three in the third, one in the fourth and two in the sixth. Beloit got on the board in the fifth when Sean Little scored on Alex Jennings' fielder's choice grounder. They added a second run in the eighth when Will Mack knocked in Jennings to make it 7-2 entering the final inning.
After the Regents went down in order in the top of the ninth, Al Loth reached on an error to lead off the bottom of the inning. Emory Nelms then singled before the first out was recorded. Jordan Jaenicke singled to load the bases before Evan Mascitti plated the first run of the inning with a single, leaving the bases loaded. Jennings followed with a hit-by-pitch to force in Nelms and Geoff Wisialowski drew another walk to drive in Jaenicke and make it 7-5 with the bases still loaded and just one out.
After a pitching change Mack singled to bring in Mascitti and pull the Buccaneers within 7-6. But RC got a strikeout and a long flyout to center to hold on for the win.
Mascitti finished with three hits. Jennings reached base five times with two walks, two fielder's choices and a hit-by-pitch.
Beloit returns to Midwest Conference play this weekend with a four-game series against St. Norbert College. They play two in De Pere on Saturday before hosting the Green Knights for two on Sunday at The Ballpark. Action begins both days at 1:00 p.m.
