Waukesha, WI -- The Beloit College Baseball team split a doubleheader at Carroll University on Saturday, winning 12-9 before losing 15-10, and, coupled with Friday's sweep in Beloit, took the opening series of Midwest Conference play three games to one.
In the opener, neither team could grab any breathing room until the Bucs took control late.
Emory Nelms gave Beloit the lead in the first, singling in Jerrick Habecker, but CU matched it with a run in the bottom of the inning. The Buccaneers put five on the board in the fifth, with Alex Jennings hitting a two-run double, Evan Mascitti singling in a run, Habecker walking with the bases loaded and Jake Tresemer scoring on a wild pitch. But Carroll put up five in the bottom of the fifth to tie it at 6-all.
In the seventh, Nelms put the Buccaneers back on top with an RBI double but, again, the Pioneers evened it up in the bottom of the inning with a single run.
Finally the Bucs took the lead for good in the eighth on Alex Jennings sacrifice fly. They then added four in the ninth, with Nelms and Jaenicke singling in runs, Mascitti getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Jennings hitting a sacrifice fly to put them up 12-7. CU rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth before Al Loth shut the door for his second save.
Aaron Bushur got the win. Nelms finished with three hits while Mascitti, Jennings and Will Mack had two each.
In the nightcap, the Buccaneers jumped on top in the first with three runs as Jennings singled in a pair and Loth hit a sacrifice fly. But the Pioneers responded with a six-run first to take the lead.
Beloit regained the lead with four in the second. Jennings singled in a run, Nelms doubled in two and Andrew Edwards had an RBI groundout. But Carroll responded with three in the bottom of two to take a 9-7 advantage.
Jaenicke's two-run home run in the third and Nelms' sacrifice fly in the fifth put the Bucs up 10-9 before CU scored twice in the seventh to take the lead and then added four in the eighth to seal it.
Mascitti and Tresemer each had three hits in the game while Jaenicke, Jennings, Nelms and Sean Little all had two.
