Bucs Blast Way to MWC Sweep of Lawrence

April 12, 2011 at 7:23 pm

Appleton, WI -- The longball finally made an appearance for the Beloit College Baseball team and it powered them to a 14-2, 17-6 sweep of Lawrence University on Tuesday afternoon, completing a four-game sweep of the Midwest Conference-opening series.

In game one the Buccaneers broke things open with a five-run third inning.  Mike Kovach hit the first Beloit home run of the season, a two-run shot to left, while Mike Ross and Drew Oswald had RBI singles.

Jordan Jaenicke had a sacrifice fly to make it 6-0 in the fourth.  After the Vikings scored twice in the bottom of the fourth Beloit tacked on three more in both the fifth and sixth innings.  Evan Mascitti, Kovach and Drew Oswald had RBIs in the fifth while Dan Edwards had a two-run home run and Jaenicke a bases-loaded walk in the sixth.

Mike Ross led off the seventh with a home run, the 14th of his career, to tie Scott Hallahan (1996-99) for the Beloit career record.  Mascitti had another RBI single in the inning to close out the scoring.

Andrew Edwards was the recipient of the explosion of runs, giving up seven hits while throwing a complete game.

Game two, though lopsided in the end, was a comeback effort for the Buccaneers.

Beloit opened the game with a three-run first, Jake Majeski and Dan Edwards getting RBIs.  But Lawrence topped that with four runs in the bottom of the inning.

The Bucs scored an unearned run to tie it at 4-all in the second before LU scored single runs in both the second and third to re-take the lead.  But Beloit erased that deficit in a big way from the fourth through the sixth innings.

Jaenike hit a grand slam to highlight a five-run fourth inning before Tresemer had an RBI single as part of a three-run fifth.  Tresemer added to his day with a three-run home run in a five-run sixth that closed out the scoring.

Aaron Bushur got the win as the second of three Buccaneer pitchers, throwing three innings of two-hit ball.

Kovach finished the day 7-9 while Jake Majeski was 4-9.  Jaenicke had seven RBIs and Jon Siil was 3-4 with three RBIs.  Tresemer added four RBIs.

The Buccaneers have a few days before getting back in to MWC play on the weekend, hosting Ripon College on Saturday at The Ballpark at Strong Stadium and playing two in Ripon on Sunday.  Game time both days is at 1:00 p.m.
