Auburndale, FL -- The Beloit College Baseball team settled for a split of their doubleheader with Webster University on Sunday as they got the 2011 season going. The Bucs won game one 3-0 before dropping game two 9-5 in eight innings.
In the first-game win, Alex Norman pitched a complete-game, five-hit shutout for the win. Mike Ross provided the offense with doubles in his first two at bats of the season.
Beloit got on the board in the first with an unearned run when Jordan Jaenicke plated Mike Kovach, who had singled, stole second and went to third on a throwing error. They made it 2-0 in the second with another unearned tally as Ross scored from second when Rick Chernik reached on an E4.
The Buccaneers closed out the scoring in the fourth on Drew Oswald's RBI single, scoring Ross, who had doubled.
Norman struck out two and walked none. No one reached second for the Gorloks after the first inning.
In game two, Beloit battled back to tie it in the seventh but WU scored four in the eighth for the win in the scheduled seven-inning game.
Webster got a run in the top of the first but the Bucs scored twice in the bottom of the inning. Oswald drove in both runs with a two-out single.
The Gorloks scored three times in the fifth to re-take the lead. Beloit got one back in the bottom of the fifth when Jake Tresemer scored on a fielding error.
WU added a run in the sixth to go up 5-3 but the Buccaneers plated two in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. Dan Edwards scored when Kovach was hit by a pitch and then Sean Little scored an unearned run to tie it.
In the eighth Webster got four runs on three hits with three hit-by-pitches to put it away. Tresemer got his third hit of the game in the bottom of the eighth but the Bucs couldn't put a rally together.
Dalton Deckert took the loss in relief of Kovach, who went 5.1 with four strikeouts and no walks. Ross had two more hits behind Tresemer's three.
The Buccaneers have a single game on Monday when they take on Bethany Lutheran College in Winter Haven.
