De Pere, WI -- The Beloit College Baseball team came up just short in a first-game slugfest at St. Norbert College on Thursday afternoon, falling 20-18.
Game two was suspended by darkness in the eighth inning with the Bucs leading 8-5.
In the opener, which eventually featured 38 runs and 42 hits, Beloit grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on Hunter Nelson's double. They added six in the second to build their lead to 7-0. In the inning, Rick Chernik and Scott Slubowski had RBI singles and Nelson clubbed a grand slam.
But the lead was short-lived as the Green Knights put up 11 runs and 12 hits, and left three on base, to take an 11-7 lead after three.
The Buccaneers got an unearned run in the fifth but SNC matched it in the bottom of the inning to lead 12-8.
Beloit re-took the lead with their second six-run inning of the game in the sixth. Nelson had an RBI single for his sixth RBI of the game while Mike Ross hit a two-run double. Jon Siil walked with the bases loaded and Drew Oswald capped the inning with a two-run base hit. The Bucs now led 14-12.
St. Norbert erased that deficit with three runs in the seventh and five more in the eighth to go up 20-14. The Buccaneers tried for a ninth-inning comeback, scoring four runs on a Slubowski single and Ross' three-run homer, giving him five RBIs for the game, but came up just short.
Nelson, Ross, Slubowski and Oswald all had three hits in the game.
The teams will complete their Midwest Conference series on Sunday at The Ballpark at Strong Stadium beginning at 12:00 noon, beginning with the completion of the suspended game.
