Winter Haven, FL -- The Beloit College Baseball team shook off a three-game Spring trip slide with a sweep of two games against Gwynedd Mercy College, winning 7-3 and 7-2.
In game one, Alex Norman scattered 11 hits for the complete-game win and Ryan Schmitz went 3-4 with two RBIs.
The Bucs scored twice in the third to break up a scoreless contest, with Scott Slubowski getting an RBI groundout and Schmitz driving in a run with a single.
The Griffins cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third and it stayed 2-1 until Beloit got a run in the sixth on a bases-loaded walk to Dillon Deckert.
The Buccaneers put the game away with four runs in the seventh. Mike Kovach scored unearned to start the scoring before Schmitz hit his second RBI single. Al Loth then executed a two-run suicide squeeze but, with Jordan Jaenicke coming around from second to score behind Schmitz.
Gwynedd Mercy got a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh to finish up the scoring.
In game two, Darren Pilcher almost matched Norman's effort, going six strong innings while scattering four hits. Anthony Edwards finished up the seventh with a pair of strikeouts. Schmitz, Jaenicke and Hunter Nelson each had two hits.
The Buccaneers got on the board in the bottom of the first on an RBI double by Nelson and a run-scoring single by Mike Ross.
The Griffins got a run back in the third before Beloit put the outcome to rest with a five-run bottom of the third. Nelson had a two-run double, Drew Oswald an RBI single, Jon Siils a run-scoring groundout and Kovach a sacrifice fly.
GMC scored their final run in the sixth.
Two more Beloit career records fell Friday. Schmitz passed Scott Hallahan's (96-99) total bases mark. He now has 188. Slubowski surpassed Nate Edwards' (99-02) career record for singles, getting his 116th.
The Buccaneers close out their trip on Saturday morning when they take on Central Region foe Aurora University in Auburndale at 9:00 a.m. EST.
