The Structure of Your Student Government

The heart of Beloit Student Congress (BSC) is the General Meeting which takes place every Monday at 7PM in Mathers A/B. This meeting is open to all students and mandatory for all club and floor representatives. The meeting is divided into two parts, Student Forum and Business. The interaction between the student body and the rest of the college occurs in the student forum section, where every student has a chance to speak directly to the prime movers on the biggest issues the college faces at any given time. The Business section is where BSC carries out its internal functions, such as committee oversight and funding.

While BSC often looks like a complicated organization, all powers are fundamentally vested in the general body. The committees act as ways to expedite processes and to prevent the general meetings from dragging on forever. However, the body can perform any action that a committee can (except Judiciary committee, because they are the arbiters of disputes) and can overturn nearly any committee decision (again, within some limits).

Committees

The BSC general body does not have the time to dispose of every issue which comes up in the normal functioning of student government. Therefore, they have delegated significant responsibilities to committees, whose members selflessly dedicate part of their life to ensure the smooth functioning of the greater BSC structure. These noble committees, their responsibilities, their meeting times and their contact information can be found in the Committees section

Elections

BSC is kept on a smooth course by your brave and valiant elected leaders. If you are an individual of wit, cunning, and moral fortitude, you just might be qualified to join their olympian ranks. Elections are held every semester, and details can be found in the Elections section.

Constitution & Bylaws

BSC, like America, has a governing document as well as myriad regulations setting forth in intricate detail what may and may not be done. As with the real government, these rules can be difficult and on occasion seem arbitrary. However, they must still be followed. To determine if you are on the right side of the law, go to the Constitution and Bylaws page, where all the rules for the BSC funds can be found.

Minutes

Ever wanted to know what happened at some BSC meeting or committee gathering? Me neither, but it is comforting to know that contained in the Minutes section are detailed notes for every meeting since 2008 (with some exceptions)!
