Bill Behling was one of a kind.

He was Beloit College’s beloved “Food Dude” for over twenty years. This fun-loving, irreverent and truly kind man made a king-sized impact on countless Beloiters during his time as director of our food service. He brought us laughter and good judgment in equal measure. He teased and he listened. Newcomers always got a boisterous Bill welcome, and when an athletic team returned late and exhausted from a game, Bill was ready and waiting to feed them well.

And he tossed ice cream sandwiches and candy bars at us when we were stressed out!

You already know all that. What you may not know is that the College is honoring Bill’s memory by establishing a prize in his name … and in his spirit. Beginning in 2009, the Bill Behling Prize will be given each year to a Beloit College staff member who shows the same energy, friendship, and encouragement for students that Bill exemplified.

Maybe one year the winner will be a housekeeper who always has the time to listen to the residents on her/his floor. Another year it could be that security officer who seems to know everyone’s name and story. Other years it will be a physical plant worker, admissions counselor, member of student affairs, coach, Commons or library worker, counselor, accountant, or secretary: an outstanding staff member who enhances our students’ Beloit experience.

There’s no better way for the College to keep faith with Bill’s legacy. We hope you agree, and that you’ll join us in making a donation to the fund that will endow the Behling Prize. Our goal is to raise $25,000 between now and the end of September, 2008.
