This year marks the 50th birthday of The Beloit Poetry Journal, a cherished
publication that has been edited by Marion Kingston Stocking for most of it’s existence. In her Commencement address this spring, Prof. Stocking described her work on the Journal when she took it over in 1954.
"Not only did I handle the business and the screening of submissions
(I still do)...I even once designed a cover."

Reference Check
When Prof. Tom McBride walked into makeup at NBC before his second appearance on The Today Show in as many years, they greeted him with "Welcome back, Tom." It was the day of the release of Beloit’s annual Mindset List, chronicling for faculty and staff, the frame of reference for entering first year students. Within a day, NBC, MSNBC, and ABC had featured the list as had hundreds of newspapers around the country. This year, the list made its first appearance abroad with stories in the London Guardian, the International Herald Tribune, and an interview with Prof. McBride on the BBC. You can find this and past years’ lists on the Homepage's link to the "Class of 2004 Mindset List".

A Jolt to the Heart of the College...
|

|
...came with College Librarian Charlotte Slocum’s policy change: Drinks are now allowed in the library (but in covered containers and not near equipment). The new head librarian joined the library staff this past spring. She says, "I’ve known about Beloit since I was a student looking at schools. Now I can see first-hand what a strong academic program the College has. I feel lucky to be a part of it." A native of Minnesota, She is pleased to "be back in a small town," after heading technical services for the DePaul University libraries in Chicago.
