Boomerang at Beloit:

Andy Mills’78, my son, sent me a copy of the Boomerang story ("Flights of Fancy," Summer 2000).

Andy is the only one [of my children] who attended Beloit College, but all of us benefitted from being part of the Beloit family for 30 plus years. The children grew up on Wisconsin [Ave.], and the College was part of home and going downtown on their bikes.

Andy chose to go to California after graduation from Beloit Memorial and returned when he said, I’m not getting the kind of instruction I know is at Beloit. He lived on campus, of course, in all the wonderful trashed out abodes that students loved. All of us agree that this little College on a bluff continues to be very special.

Cheers to Belwah!

The Other ’60s Style:

As a decorative arts historian, I suggest the College archives check the date on the photograph of Helen Brace Emerson, published in the spring issue of the magazine. Her dress, hair style, and the studio backdrop all date to the 1860s, not 1884 as stated in the caption.

Editor’s note: Quite right. Helen Brace married Joseph Emerson in 1884; the archives photo (which is not dated) may well represent Mrs. Emerson’s earlier college years—which match the 1860s costume.

Learning, Meeting, Greeting:

I recently returned to the Beloit College campus as a participant in the ChemConnections Faculty Workshop (June 14-17). This was only the second time I had returned to campus since my graduation (1982) and the first time since becoming a chemistry faculty member myself. I am a professor of chemistry at Wells College, a small liberal arts college for women, located in the Finger Lakes region of New York, where I have been teaching since 1987.

Not only did I enjoy visiting campus and learn a lot from the workshop, but I had also the extreme pleasure of meeting again with two of my former faculty, Brock Spencer (who was the person who got me to attend Beloit in the first place) and George Lisensky (my academic and research advisor).

I have posted a photograph of Brock, George, and myself at: http://aurora.wells.edu/~ctb/beloit.htm.

Jane Goodall, Ethologist:

I received the Summer 2000 issue of Beloit College Magazine, and enjoyed it very much. As a biologist who studies animal behavior, I especially appreciate the article on Jane Goodall. Her visit to Beloit College was historic and important, and was probably the most effective boost to town-gown relations in many years.

One small correction is in order, however. Dr. Goodall’s Ph.D. is in Ethology (the study of animal behavior), not Ethnology (the study of socio-economic systems and cultural heritage in primitive societies). The name ethology comes from the Latin ethologia, the art of depicting character, or the Greek ethos (habits) plus -ology (the study of). Thus, although Goodall is usually described as an anthropologist, her formal training is actually in animal behavior (an interdisciplinary field whose practitioners come from biology, anthropology, psychology, sociology, and economics, among others).

Whoops, again:

Whoops, you’ll have to try again. That gentleman with Dean Stone in the September photo of the Beloit College 2000 calendar was not Carl Pill Nelson (as Jim Patterson’57 indicated) but Perry MaGill’26. Having known and admired both men, I’m confident in the identification. During my four years at Beloit I played football and ran track for Coach Nelson. And Perry MaGill was my uncle.

The photo was taken at Homecoming 1957, the year that MaGill chaired the Alumni Fund drive.

Although there existed physical similarities between the two men, few people could wear a derby with the aplomb of Perry MaGill. That year he promised if the drive went over the top he would appear at the victory dinner in Scottish kilts, which he did in style. During the 1920s, MaGill was also Beloit’s record holder in the high jump.

Both Coach Nelson and Uncle Perry have passed away, but they are remembered fondly by many Beloiters.
